Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has long been a workhorse technique for making analytical measurements in a variety of industries, answering the questions: Near Infrared Chemical Imaging extends this paradigm to answer the additional geometrical question – ‘Where’ (related to product performance)?
To develop product understanding, complex questions that incorporate these simple concepts need to be asked and answered. Within the pharmaceutical industry, for example, questions such as the following may be critical to understanding product performance: Near infrared chemical imaging (NIR-CI) answers these questions and many others. This information can be used for optimizing manufacturing processes, to ensure that Quality is delivered. The emphasis on product and process understanding, rather than product testing is a hallmark of the Quality by Design initiative. Malvern Instruments’ unique approach to NIR-CI enables statistically robust results to be rapidly obtained. This speed is a tremendous benefit when hundreds of different samples are being analyzed through the Design of Experiment process. We will present the NIR-CI technology and applications from the pharmaceutical industry. In keeping with the goals of the Quality by Design initiative, discussion will focus on how to derive statistically meaningful, reproducible, and quantitative results.
